In this part of the tutorial we heat and shape the blade of the sword. Part 1 of this tutorial is here
|
Ok, let's flatten out that blade. Remember, you can skip this step if you don't have a heat gun. Heating the pipe up does soften it and change it a bit. So we want to slide the blade into the X piece while we heat it. That way it still fits later. Note: We don't want to flatten out that last inch of the pipe. We want it to stary round so it can fit into the X piece!
Ok, put the heat gun on high and heat the pvc pipe. Do this by moving across the length back and forth in a moderately slow motion. Watch the video to see how we did it. Note a couple of things here. We laid down aluminum foil so as not to burn the table. And see the left hand has a safety glove on it? A heat gun is not a hair dryer. It gets much much hotter. So be very respectful of it. Don't point it at yourself or any part of yourself.
And look at that! The PVC will get very soft and flexible. Almost like a garden hose.
With a safety glove on you can squeeze it in different spots to see what is soft and what needs more heat!
Total time for us was about 15 minutes of slowly and evenly heating it.
Once the whole thing is nice and soft quickly put it between two boards.
And clamp it down!
If you don't have clamps that's ok! Stand on it. Put some weight on it for a few minutes.
Leave the weight on it for fifteen minutes then go ahead and take it out. Make sure it is has cooled to a reasonable level before touching it!
There you go! The blade of your sword is flat! It looks great. Continue with the tutorial or ...
