Make a 16th Century gun-sword part 4: touch up and painting

In this part of the tutorial we do some touch up work to make sure it shoots cleanly and then we paint it.

Let's touch things up to insure it shoots smoothly. Notice in this next picture how there are spaces between the sheets of foamboard near the trigger. When the rubber band releases it can get caught in these spaces. So apply glue or hot glue to fill them in. Be careful not to affect the motion of the trigger with the glue.

Once you have applied glue you can use a toothpick or other tool to smooth it out.

Once the glue dries, test it by putting a rubber band on it and shooting it! If it works fine then you can move on to the next step and paint it.

If it still doesn't fire this is the reason.

The trigger is pulling the rubber band down but not releasing. We can easily fix this.

Remember that section you applied glue to so the rubber band wouldn't get stuck in the cracks? Now glue a small piece of foamboard over that area. Then peel away the top layer of paper and about half the foam. This now acts as a hold. It holds the rubber band up higher so that when the trigger pulls down, the rubber band will pull off the trigger thus firing.

Okay, test it.

Once you have it then you can move on to painting the gun-sword.
