Make a Chamber of Wonders Paper Diorama (Tatebanko)

A chamber of wonders is a room that holds wonders from around the world. They were sort of like private little museums that people put together. A good example of them is at the Walters Art Museum. I have more about it here

The paper diorama we make is in the style of the ancient Japanese art of paper dioramas called "Tatebanko". If you are interested in more tatebanko projects I have a whole lot of them free for you to make right here: Tatebanko projects

The Downloads for this project are right here:

1. The Empty Box

2. The stuff for the chamber of wonders

This is an easy project. I give you everything. And I have designed it so you can run with it and make literally any kind of tatebanko project that you want. You can draw up your own wonders and put them in your tatebanko box. Or you can download and print up images from the internet and use them. There are a whole lot of possibilitiesd with this project.

A Note about what paper to use for this project.

You can use normal printer paper but it is a bit too flimsy. It will be weak. You should use paper that is a bit thicker than normal. Paper comes in an old fashioned scale called pounds. The higher the pound number the thicker the paper. Normal printer paper is 20 pound. I recommend you use at least 65 pound paper to make this. I bought a pack of 65 pound paper at walmart for less than 4 dollars. It is also available on amazon here.

If you want it nice and durable then get 90 pound paper. I love that paper. It is very strong and sturdy.

First download the tatebanko empty box and make it, leaving one side open. There are six pieces and all the instructions are in the download packet.

Once you have the box completed make a sheet to slide into the base of the box. You will glue all the various wonders to this base then insert the whole thing into the tatebanko box.

Next you can download and print up on 65 pound paper my sheet of wonders. Or you can go ahead and draw on 65 pound paper your own items for your chamber of wonders. My pdf sheet of wonders is right here.

Cut out those various wonders and mount them to the inside of the box and to the base plate. Then insert that base plate into the box.

And finish the project by adding any external details that you like. Remember this project is very flexible. You can create it any way you like. Add any details that you want.
