This is a fun project that uses your sense of touch. You put a mystery object in the box and people reach in and try to guess what the object is. This box is an exploration in Haptic perception.
|
Haptic perception means literally the ability "to grasp something". Perception in this case is achieve through the active exploration of surfaces and objects by a moving subject.
Tools and Materials:
You can use a wide variety of boxes for this project. A large box like this one allows a person to reach both hands in the box. If you use a smaller box you can cut just one hole in it so a person just uses one hand. On the back of the box cut out a large rectangle. Add a tab to it and use duct tape along the top of it to hold it in place. We want it to hinge upward. This causes it to be a bit of a screen that acts as a hide when you are putting something inside.
Cut a large circle on each side of the box. Make them large enough so a hand can comfortably fit through it.
On the inside of the box cover the hole with a piece of dark cloth. Tape it along the top. Seal the box top. You are ready to go!
Ideas for what to put in it Think about objects that offer interesting shapes and textures. Plush animals, various fruits, wooden objects and small toys. In this picture I have placed an apple that is blown out of glass. This offers a very interesting puzzle for a person. It is apple in shape but it is made out of glass.
