If you are a man looking for a hobby I have a whole list of them here for you to consider. And each of these is something that I pursue so I can speak to it. And this isn't just an article written by somebody. This all is written by me and each of the hobbies is something that I pursue or have pursued in the past. A hobby can be an enormously enriching pursuit and it can easily be shaped to exactly what you want of it. If you are just looking for occasional weekend hobbying or something more consuming you can spend exactly as little or as much time and energy on it that you want. "Today is life-the only life you are sure of. Make the most of today. Get interested in something. Shake yourself awake. Develop a hobby. Let the winds of enthusiasm sweep through you. Live today with gusto." - Dale Carnegie |
Blacksmithing - This is a great hobby that I really enjoy. There is nothing quite like hammering on red hot steel. I have lots of tutorials on how to get started and I have plenty of tutorials on how to make knives and even swords. You don't have to start out with a forge and an anvil. You can get started by making a knife with just some basic hand tools. I have all the tutorials you could want from beginner to more advanced. Check out my blacksmithing section right here
Military Models and Dioramas It has been a long standing hobby for men - to build plastic models and to also build them into scenes or dioramas. I have a whole lot of great tutorials on both these aspectss. Make Military Dioramas and Models
Model Rockets Model rocketry is a really fun and a rather inexpensive hobby. There are two distinct aspects to it. First you get to build the rockets and then you get to fire them off. Great pairing of skills. And if you want to get more in-depth into the hobby you can learn about actual rocket science you can design your own rockets and perform your own tests. I have a whole section of my website devoted to it. The Hobby of Model Rockets
R/C Airplanes This hobby is pretty much the same age as the airplane itself. The whole science of air flight was a hobby. Today it is still practiced and it has grown enormously. It now includes drones, helicopters and an array of amazing airplanes. You can build them from scratch or buy them complete and ready to fly. And there is a whole range in-between. You can also do partial builds to see how you like that aspect of it. I have lots of tutorials, videos and more about this hobby here: R/C Airplanes
Wood Working This is a great hands on hobby and the things that can be made are limitless. It is a perfect pairing between craft and function because while you are learning the craft you are also making things that can be very functional like bookshelves, footstools, cupboards, hardwood floors and more. You can also pair up woodworking with another pursuit. For example, if you are interested in siege engines you can put your wood working hobby to use by making a ten foot trebuchet! I have a tutorial for making one right here. And it includes blueprints.
Collecting Collecting things is a very diverse hobby. And you can collect absolutely anything that interests you. There is no limit. It can range from seashells to books, guns or even, like me, stamps. I love stamp collecting. I used to do it as a kid and teenager. And now in my older years I have returned to it. Learn more about stamp collecting here
Make a Ship in a bottle In the city I live in there is a Marine Musuem with all kinds of amazing stuff from the past history of nautical life here in New England. And one of the most amazing things in the museum is the collection of ships in bottles. They are absolutely spectacular miniature versions of real ships. Something that is museum quality takes hundreds of hours to make. Maybe you don't want to get to be that good. But you can start out in this wonderful hobby with an inexpensive kit. Something that will teach you the fundamentals of how to get a ship in a bottle and how to get the sails up. I have a tutorial that will get you started right here: Make a ship in a bottle -
Leatherworking This is another great hands on hobby that dates back hundreds of years. Not a lot has really changed in the past hundred years. The tools and techniques for working with leather are still the same. And it is a very functional hobby in that you can make all kinds of useful items like belts, wallets and much much more. It even is very conducive to artistic expression. I have a section of my website devoted to leatherworking right here.
Beekeeping This is one of those hobbies that a lot of people think about. There is something very alluring about raising bees. It is also something that has experienced a resurgence over the past decade predominantly because of concerns over colony collapse disorder and its ramifications on the health of the eco-system. It takes a bit of money to get yourself started but with some ingenuity you can cut your expenses dramatically. And because of the resurgence in interest prices for start up have dropped significantly. Learn all about my hives and how to be a beekeeper right here.
Homebrewing If you enjoy beer and wine you might really enjoy making it. There are few things as satisfying as drinking something that you made yourself. And you can start out with a kit that gets you off to a good start. Starting out can be as easy as mixing honey, water and yeast then waiting for it to transform into wine. And as you learn you can start to experiment with all kinds of things, changing alcohol content, flavors and much more. It is a science and an art. I home brew Mead which is a very traditional wine made from honey rather than grapes. If you are interested in Mead making check out my tutorials here.
Amateur Astronomy Ths is a hobby that is counter to everything the world now chases after! This is all about quiet time under a deep rich sky. It can be a bit of a challenge, particularly if you live in a big city, but it is well worth it. My favorite hobby of all time. And you can make what you want of this hobby by pursuing the things about it that interest you. It can be binoculars and constellation charts or can even be scientific in ways like searching for double stars and meteors that are yet unfound. Wonderful stuff. I have all you need if you want to learn more about amateur astronomy including telescope making.
Aquariums and Fish This is an excellent indoor hobby that will give you many hours of enjoyment in a lot of ways. It starts with planning and setup then moves to care and maintenance and of course all the while you get an aquarium for you, your family and guests to enjoy. I take care of goldfish and they are a hardy way to start out in the art of aquariums and fish.
Drawing, Painting, and Art I have heard many times from people "When I retire I am going to get an easel and oil paints and do paintings." That is a wonderful thing and if you are retiring and considering doing this then I say go for it . But I also say why wait until you retire? It doesn't take a lot of time and energy to get started. You can do it an hour here and an hour there. There is a lot of expression to be had in this. And if you don't want to start right out in oil paints you can start very simply with just paper and pencil. From there you can branch out to colored pencils, water colors and a whole lot more. I create fantasy art and I have a series of lessons to get you started right here: The Fantasy Art School.
A hobby gives a man freedom to pursue his passions and is an outlet for the facets of life that are not stimulated by career or personal obligations.
