Goldfish Putting a goldfish in a bowl was something frequently done. But in recent years we have come to realize it is not a good idea for the health and happiness of the goldfish. Some cities in the world have actually even banned goldfish bowls as a form of animal cruelty. They are very high metabolism fish. They excrete a lot and this means that the levels of toxin in their water can quickly get very high, dangerously high. They also have high oxygen needs and this cannot be supplied in a bowl where there isn't much surface in contact with the air. So, modern recommendations are that you keep goldfish in a container that is larger than a bowl.

Interesting fact about goldfish in bowls It is believed that the practice of putting goldfish in a bowl comes from a misunderstanding - form a chinese practice where a goldfish was temporarily taken out of a pond and put in a bowl for temporary display. Then replaced back into the pond.
Typical recommendations are that you have ten gallons of water per goldfish. This is quite a bit and it might not be practical for you but do your best to get your goldfish as much water as you can. And if you have to go lower than the ten gallon per fish rule you can somewhat compensate for it by changing the water as often as possible, ideally once a week. This will help to keep your goldfish happy and healthy. So, myl recommendation is to at least get a ten gallon tank for up to three goldfish and change the water frequently.
