How to Set up a Goldfish Tank Part 4: Maintaining the Water

The water in your goldfish tank is the most important thing. It is easy to care for but there are some things you should know and do. And there are some tests you should make to insure the water stays healthy and clean for your pet or pets.

About the water and caring for it

siphon water

The most important thing you can do with your goldfish aquarium is change the water. You do this by draining out 1/3 to 1/2 of the water and replacing it with new water. You should do this on a weekly basis. You can do this any way that is comfortable for you.

They do make special pumps for this procedure that easily drain and refill your aquarium. These are very popular with aquarium owners.

The typical tank cleaner is something that you attach to a faucet and with it you can pump out water then easily refill the tank.

25 Foot - Python No Spill Clean and Fill Aquarium Maintenance System -

Smaller, more frequent water changes are imperative to the health of your fish. Without regular water changes, invisible toxins can build up in your aquarium creating a hazardous environment for its inhabitants. The Python No Spill Clean and Fill is a complete ready-to-use system which adapts easily to most faucets and makes water changes a breeze. It drains as well as fills aquariums, and will not disturb fish or decor during routine aquarium maintenance. No buckets, no siphons, no mess, no tank tear downs...EVER again. The Python No Spill Clean and Fill system includes: hose, gravel tube, switch, hose connectors, faucet pump, and brass faucet adapter.

Clean Gravel

Cleaning the Gravel:

Another thing you should do is keep the gravel clean in your tank. But it can be difficult to do. They make specific tools for this. I use a battery operated gravel cleaner.

Battery Operated Gravel Cleaner -

A powerful 3-in-1 aquarium cleaning tool, the TOM Mr. Cleaner from KollerCraft siphons water, removes algae, and cleans gravel. The battery-operated Mr. Cleaner eliminates the need to manually start your gravel siphon. Mr. Cleaner rapidly begins removing dirty aquarium water with a simple push of a button. The nylon bag quickly traps debris and unwanted fish waste. You can also attach a hose when a water change is needed. Ideal for siphoning nano tanks, Mr. Cleaner is extendable from 8 to 16 inches and is powered by two C-size batteries (not included. In addition to its popular desktop aquariums, KollerCraft also offers TOM aquarium filters and accessories, and Repitat reptile habitats.

One great thing you can do is talk with other aquarium owners and if possible the people at a store that sells aquariums and pet fish. They often will have lots of good knowledge about your water. Maybe your city water has specific things about it. These people will know about it.

This is how I got started. I even took a sample of my tank water to my local aquarium shop and they tested it. I wanted to be sure it was ok before I put the fish in it.

Chlorine, Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH.

Using Test Strips

Test strips

The test strips come with full instructions. And it varies depending on what you are testing for. This kit tests for ammonia levels in your tank which is an important check.

Dip test strip

You dip the test strip in your aquarium for the proscribed amount of time. In the case of this ammonia test strip it is for one second.

Compare test strip color

The pad of the test strip changes color. You compare that color to the chart on the bottle. There are typically two charts, one for fresh water and one for salt water.
