Make a Star Wars Light Dagger - Part 3

In this part of the tutorial we continue making the light dagger.

Part 1 (the beginning) of this tutorial is here

Cut a piece of foam

Cut out a piece of foam board like this.

It is less than two inches wide. That is important.

Glue it to blade

Glue it to one end of the blade. See how it is not as wide? Less than two inches. This way it doesn't rub against the sides of the handle.

Cut two slots

Now cut two slots in it like this. One on each side of the blade.

Attach rubber band

Feed a rubber band through each of those slots and tie each end in a knot.

Put a dab of glue on each of the knots so it doesn't come undone.

Insert the blade

Now, holding the rubber bands stretched, insert the blade into the handle.

Test it

And test the spring action by pushing the blade all the way in and letting it spring out. Adjust the tension on your rubber bands until you get nice action through the full slide of the blade.

Plac end cap

Previously you had cut yourself a second end cap. Now place it on the end of the dagger, with the blade inserted.

Mark a line

And mark a line across it right where the blade is.

Cut in half

And then cut it in half on that line.

Tape rubber band to test

Now tape that end cap on and tape those rubber bands in place. Test it and set it all, including the tension of the rubber bands so it all works well. You should be able to squeeze it holding the blade in. Then release your squeeze and the blade should slide out.

Once you have it right you can remove the tape piece by piece and hot glue it all.
