In this part of the tutorial we glue and assemble the saw cleaver. Part 1 of this tutorial is here
|
Take the blade you have cut out. It's the big piece with the saw teeth on it. And put white glue on all the edges.
And wipe that glue smooth with your finger. This glue is a good thing to do. It seals the edges of the foam, smoothes it out and makes the whole blade stronger. Don't do the handle pieces yet. We will add this glue to them after we put the handle together.
If you have mod podge go ahead and brush on a thin and even coat on both sides of this saw blade. This will protect and strengthen it.
Mod Podge CS11302 Original 16-Ounce Glue, Matte Finish Mod Podge dries clear in approximately 15-20 minutes and can be sanded to a smooth finish. Non-toxic. Use as a glue for paper, fabric, and other porous materials, as a sealer for wood, paper, and prints, and as a finish for printed material, decoupage, and fabric. Also functions as a painting medium for water-based paint. The water-based sealer, glue, and finish for all surfaces. Non-toxic, non-flammable.
Now let's put the handle together. These three pieces form a stack, one right on top of the other with the short one in the middle.
Just like this. Go ahead and glue them using any glue of your preference. Hot glue is also quite ok for this.
To make the handle more comfortable you can bevel all the edges on it with a sharp hobby knife. This rounds the handle out a bit and makes it less square.
The bevels.
Now apply glue to the sides of the handle assembly just as you did with the blade. And wipe it smooth with your finger.
Be sure to keep the gap here clear of glue. Wipe it out with a brush. Glue in here can form little bumps that will inhibit the free motion of your saw cleaver opening and closing.
Ok, we have made the handle. Let's continue with the tutorial and put it together
