Make the Smaug Catapult - The Dwarven Wind Lance

This is the big catapult like siege engine that is used to shoot at Smaug in the Hobbit movie. In this tutorial we make a small table top sized one out of simple materials.

I give you the template. You just have to print it up and use it to make your catapult.

The template is right here

And this thing is really powerful.

Will has a youtube channel with over 700 videos on projects you can make. Check it out right here

Materials Needed:

  • 1 sheet of foamboard (5mm thick)
  • Hot glue and glue gun
  • Several rubber bands
  • Straw for the projectile
  • Brown paint
  • The template (right here)

The template

Print up the template.

Trace onto foam board

Place the two pages of the template on foam board and using a pencil go over all the parts, pressing down firmly. This causes indents in the foam board. And pay attention to the numbers on the template. For example, some pieces you need to make two of them, some pieces you make four etc...

Strengthen lines with a ruler

Once you have traced over all those parts you can remove the template pages and see the indents. Draw those out with a pencil and ruler. You end up with all the parts on the foamboard sheet.

You can cut the template pieces and trace if needed

If you have difficulty seeing the indented lines you can always simply cut out the template pieces, place them on the foam board and trace around them.

Check the pieces

Ok, all the pieces are traced. Take a look at them before you cut them out. Be sure every part is numbered. That is important so you can easily follow the directions and put it together by the numbers.
