Hamilton Bermuda

Hamilton is the capital of Bermuda and has been since 1815. It is more of a city where the people of Bermuda live and work. So, there are lots of apartment buildings and office buildings. All typical city stuff. But it also has lots of tourist appeal -- particular around the ferry port along the waterline.

I had two main goals for visiting Hamilton. These are the Anglican Cathedral and the Catholic Cathedral. Let's take a look.

Here are the main areas I cover with Bermuda:

The Anglican Cathedral of the most Holy Trinity

Let's take a look inside.

One thing of particular note in this cathedral isthe double rows of columns. A row of columns left and right is very standard with gothic architecture. I was very surprised to see the double rows. You can see one of the double rows in this next picture.

I inquired about this and was told that during construction and re-work of the cathedral at some time in the past when the cathedral was upgraded they added second sets of columns to support the weight of the cathedral and roof. This is because of the native bermuda stone that was used is not as strong or long lasting as typical European Granite and Marble.

Look at this beautiful carving craftsmanship.

One of the noteworthy things about this beautiful cathedral is the series of stained glass windows.

There is also a Catholic Cathedral in Hamilton. This Cathedral we have just looked at is designed in the Gothic style. The Catholic Cathedral is very different! It is the Cathedral of Saint Theresa.
