Make the Crossguard Lightsaber - Part 2

In this part of the tutorial we build the sword by gluing the pieces together. Then we do the detail work on the handle.

Part 1 of the tutorial is here

Let's Build it

Glue blade pieces together

Now glue the two blade pieces together. One right on top of the other. I used a hot glue gun but you can use just about any kind of glue.

Glue handles on

Now glue the handle pieces on. One on top. Then flip the sword over and glue the other handle piece on.

That's it for the assembly of the sword. Let's clean it up and do some detail work.

Sand edges

Now sand the edges a bit to clean things up and get all the edges nice and crisp like metal.

Apply template

Now let's do the detail work on the handle.

Place the template on the handle of the sword.

Trace details

Using a blunt pencil trace over all the detail lines on the handle. Press firmly with the pencil. You want to impress the lines onto the foam board.

Draw out detail lines

Now remove the template and draw out all those lines with a pencil.

Cut detail lines

Now cut all those lines with a sharp knife. You want to cut through the top layer of paper and a little of the foam but that's it. no need to press deep.

Open cuts with a toothpick

Use a toothpick or something similar to open up those lines you cut. You are turning them into gulleys.

Open with a pencil

Then use a rounded pencil to further open those gulleys and to put some nice dark graphite in them.

Paint the creases

This is what you end up with. These gulleys give the sword handle a nice look. It will look like pieces of metal assembled together.
