Make a Cardboard Light Box

A light box is an outstanding tool for creativity and it can be a big help with all kinds of project.

In this tutorial I show you how to make a big one out of cardboard and a few tools and supplies.

At the bottom of the page I also have a youtube video you can watch. It shows you how to make it.

In this picture you see the light box we make in this tutorial. You see a stained glass knight on it! That's not part of the lightbox. That is a stained glass window I am working. And I am using the lightbox to see it clearly and to paint the window.

I have a complete series of tutorials and videos about this stained glass knight right here.

cardboard light box

The dimensions of this light box: 24" x 18" and it is 5 inches deep.

There are four components to this project:

  1. Cardboard
  2. Two pieces of Lexan (Polycarbonate clear plastic sheets)
  3. A string of LED's
  4. One sheet of foamboard

It's a very easy construction and here is a diagram to show you how it is put together.

Parts, Tools, Materials:

  • The exact lexan I bought on Amazon is right here: https://amzn.to/4lshd2D
  • The exact string of LED lights with brightness adjustment knob is here: https://amzn.to/3IcvUIB (this comes complete, plug, cable, the string of LED's and the dimmer knob.) And it cost about ten dollars.
