In this part of the tutorial we finish with the tracing of the template, transferring the patterns to foamboard and we do the assembly. |
Also trace part 4 onto the foamboard. Trace two of them per kukri you want to make. And , you can't trace around the interior lines that make up the pommel, the guard and the two ornamenal shapes. What you do with those is write over them with a blunt pencil, pressing firmly. This leaves an imprint in the foamboard that you can see and draw out.
Follow this same process with the shuriken. Place it on the foamboard and trace it out with a blunted pencil. This leaves a nice imprint on the foamboard.
Now you can remove the template and see the imprints in the foamboard. And you can trace it out.
Ok! Everything is traced onto foamboard. Go ahead and cut all the pieces out.
Will's Tips on Cutting Foam board: Don't try to cut all the way through it in one swipe. Use a really sharp blade and make three passes. the first pass just cuts the top layer of paper. Second pass cuts the foam and the third pass cuts through the bottom layer of foam.
Let's put the pieces together Apply some kind of glue to one of the kukri pieces. I am using a hot glue gun. You can use any kind of glue that you have.
Once the glue has set you can trim any excess or overlap to make it look clean and crisp.
Next glue on the handle pieces. One on top and one underneath. But first....
First lets bevel those handles. Cut the ends off at an angle like this so those ends have a nice bevel. Do both ends .
NOTE: For each kukri you make you have to flip over one of the handle pieces and bevel the back side! Otherwise it won't fit right on the kukri. The bevel will be upside down.
Finish off those handle pieces by cutting out the ornamental holes.
Now glue those handle pieces onto the kukri. One on top and one underneath.
Let's continue with the tutorial and paint it
