Make a Medieval Drawing and art Box - Part 3

In this part of the tutorial we continue making the box by adding the organizer tray.

Part 1 of this tutorial is here

The shelves in the box

Now we want a nice area in the bottom of the box so we can store our sketch pads and sheets of paper.

So we will make a new shelf all the way around the bottom inside of the box. it is one inch tall.

Glue in those shelves

So cut some strips of foamboard that are one inch in width and the lengths of the four sides of the box. These strips are a double stack! So glue two strips together before gluing them into the box.

Add a layer

Now cut a piece of foam board to fit inside the box and sit right on top of that one inch shelf you just installed. Put a hole in this piece so you can lift it out to access the drawing pad that is under there!

Add sides to the shelves

Now let's take this piece with the hole in it and turn it into an organizer tray.

Glue sides all the way around the edge of it.

I call them sides and they are, but you don't glue them to the sides of that bottom piece. You glue them directly down to the top of it! Otherwise it wouldn't fit back in the box.

Add compartments

Now go ahead and add walls in any way you like so the organizer is suitable for your art and drawing supplies.

Notice how the ledges are even

And make sure that all of the walls you created for your organizer tray are lower than the outer shelf on the box wall. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to sit a lid on the whole box.

The top

Cut a piece of foamboard to fit right on top of the box. It should slide right in and sit nicely on that shelf all the way around the inside.
