In this part of the tutorial we continue by gluing together the various parts of the sword. |
Glue the two blade pieces together one right on top of the other.
Then glue the handle pieces together one right on top of the other to form a stack of four. First is a B1, then a C1, then another C1 and finally another B1.
Trim the long edges of the handle to round the handle out a bit. Then sand the corners and edges smooth. Always sand the corners of foamboard smooth after you cut and or glue it.
Now let's work on the handle. Wrap and glue a piece of rope around each end as you see in the picture.
Also wrap some wire around the handle like this. Kind of like a barber pole.
Glue the ornamental piece on the pommel. (One on the other side too) Then tape up the handle section covering the wire and both rings of rope. It is difficult to see in this picture because we used white tape! You can use any kind of tape, and in any color. But electrical tape works best.
Now glue on the extra pieces that go on the guard. One one each side of the sword.
Ok! Now glue the two halves together - The blade should fit snugly into that handle slot.
There is only one more piece to assemble onto this sword. Right down the middle of the blade is a strip. If you look at the template you made you can see lines down the middle. Cut that center piece out.
If it is paper it is a bit thin. You can use it for the next step. But better would be to trace it onto cereal box cardboard or card stock. Then apply the glue and then glue it right down the center of the blade. It is kind of like a fuller or "blood groove".
Now to achieve that wonderful wrought iron look you roughly apply Gloss Super Heavy Gel to the sword blade. Gloss Super Heavy Gel is an art supply product. You can buy it at art shops, arts and crafts stores and amazon.com here: Liquitex Professional Gloss Super Heavy Gel Medium, 16-oz You apply it with a popsicle stick. Kind of like you are applying frosting to a cake.
