Medieval America -Starting out

This is a series of videos, essays and webpages where Will travels all around America visiting Medieval themed places like castles, meaderies, stone masons and blacksmiths.

April 27 - 30 2018 (Swansea Massachusetts)

Well, that was it. I sold the house. And now I begin a new chapter in my life. It was about time I was sitting at the same desk for a dozen years. And while that life was rewarding I had been itching for a long time to have an adventure. And now the adventure begins.

But first, I needed a few days to decompress and do pretty much nothing. Which is what I did. And a few days really wasn't enough but it was a good start for me.

And it felt strange to not do anything. I had been so busy for so long it made me feel even a bit guilty.

I did have loose ends that needed taking care of so I didn't want to just drive off into the sunset on the first day. It was good for me to hang around for a few days.

But I am really excited to be starting this new chapter ahead of me. I have, in my life done a fair amount of international travel. But for some reason I had never done much travel within the continental United States. And now I was going to do it. The whole country is in front of me!!

And you already know I have a theme in mind. I call it Medieval America. I will be visiting all kinds of medieval places. But I won't be limiting myself. I will visit other places too. I will see those places that are symbolic in America.

Figuring out how to do this was a bit of a logistical challenge.

There were a lot of things to consider. First off. I will be traveling and working which means I have to take a certain amount of my office with me. And of course at some point in the future I will be getting another place to live which meant I shouldn't just give up all my worldly possessions. So I made a lot of decisions.

Some of my stuff I sold. Some of my stuff I donated to charity. Some of it I threw out and some of it I put into storage. This was an arduous process but it all went pretty well. And it felt amazingly good to streamline and simplify my life.

I pared it all down to some basics. What would I need for the next four months of travel? What was absolutely necessary for me to get my work done? And what would I need to take care of myself?

I ended up with a basic supply of clothing and office materials including a laptop, cellphone, gps and all my camera equipment. And a weeks worth of clothes. Aside from that I figured I could buy things as I needed them.

After all, I am traveling in America not Nepal. There is a Walmart in every city. And anything I need at all is probably not more than a few miles away.

And low and behold I could even still order things on amazon by using their new AMazon Lockers Service

Amazon has lockers like this all over the country. You can order something and have it delivered to a locker. When it arrives you get an email with a code. You simply enter the code and your locker door opens.

And it came in handy because for some reason I could not find the power cord to my laptop. It somehow got lost in the shuffle of selling the house. SO, I ordered a new one on amazon and two days later I picked it up at this exact locker. Just as my laptop battery was running very low.

As of the writing of this article there are over 2,000 amazon lockers spread across america.

Let me leave you with this thought. As I sat in the chair outside my motel room I thought about a lot of things. And at night I looked up at the stars a lot. One of the nights I broke out my fancy camera and took a picture of the Moon over Swansea.

Learn more about the castle here

I have the first version of this castle done. It is an eight page pdf which includes the base sheet that you assemble it on. There are not yet any instructions to go with it. But you should be able to put it together relatively easily. I recommend you print it up onto some kind of index card or card stock. 90 pound paper is the best. Download it here: Merry Mead Castle Paper booklet

(If you need 90 pound paper it is available on amazon right here)
