Singer Castle

This castle stands on an island called "Dark Island" it is in the St. Lawrence river which forms the border between the US and Canada.

You can't just go to it on your own. You have to take a ferry but that is a very easy process. You can buy a tour ticket, take the ferry then get a guided tour of the island and the castle.

About Singer Castle: It was constructed in 1905 by entrepreneur Frederick Bourne, the fifth president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. He was inspired by a book written by Sir Walter Scott. In the book Scott describes a castle. Mr. Bourne decided he wanted to build that castle. And thus, this castle was born.

The Sir Walter Scott Novel is called "Woodstock" and the castle was Woodstock castle.

Interested in reading this novel? it is now in the public domain and I have it right here for download: Woodstock; or The Cavalier. A Tale of the Year Sixteen Hundred and Fifty-one -epub version here - Kindle version here

Today this is a vibrant and very much alive castle. A lot of the castles I have visited are in ruins or only partially maintained. This one has a rich culture and hosts a series of events. You can book a private party or banquet here or you can stay overnight in one of the guest rooms.

There are some magical and mysterious things about this castle! It has sliding secret bookshelves, an underground tunnel, secret passages, a dungeon and more!

I believe, but don't hold me 100% to this, that the rooms are $750 a night! Wow, but for a night you get to stay in a real castle!

Don't let that price stop you from visiting as a tourist though. The tour and ferry out to the island are very reasonably priced. You can learn more about all this on their website: Singer Castle website

Woodstock by Sir Walter Scott - Woodstock, or The Cavalier. A Tale of the Year Sixteen Hundred and Fifty-one (1826) is a historical novel by Walter Scott. Set just after the English Civil War, it was inspired by the legend of the Good Devil of Woodstock, which in 1649 supposedly tormented parliamentary commissioners who had taken possession of a royal residence at Woodstock, Oxfordshire. The story deals with the escape of Charles II in 1652, during the Commonwealth, and his final triumphant entry into London on 29 May 1660.

Singer Castle Revisited -

Singer Castle Revisited is a fresh look at this castle's rich 100-year history with many new stories and photographs of its original owner, Frederick G. Bourne; his daughter Marjorie, who owned the castle for the next 40 years; and Dr. Harold and Eloise Martin. The Bournes were well known for their marvelous collection of yachts and Gold Cup–winning speedboats. Since the release of Singer Castle, the new owners of this historical Thousand Islands landmark have invested nearly $10 million into restoring it to its original condition. In addition, gracious relatives of the former owners' families have shared their private collections of previously unpublished pictures dating from as far back as the castle's construction.
