Blacksmithing a coin:
tools and materials list

On this page I have a comprehensive list of all the various tools and materials I ordered and used for this project. You can use this list to purchase materials or as a guide to getting your own variants if you want to blacksmith some coins.

Materials Specific to the coins

  • The two dies: Steel, cold rolled round, (C1018 steel) 1.500 inch diameter, 2 inches long, quantity 2 (Ordered from MetalSupermarkets.com)
  • The tube: Steel, cold rolled tube, 175 outside diameter, with the steel wall being .120 thick. Length 4 inches (Ordered from Metal Supermarkets)
  • The coins: .118 thick, radius .74 inches -gives a diameter of 1.48 inches. Material is mild steel. The coins are a little bit smaller than the interior diameter of the tube to allow for expansion of the coin when forging and compressing.. Ordered online from metalscut4u.com
  • The square bars for setting into the hardy hole on the anvil: C1018 cold rolled steel, 2 inches long, 1 inch square. Quantity: 2. They are of the same steel as the dies so they can easily be welded together.
