How to Make Medieval Arrow Tips (Bodkin) - Part 3

In this part of the tutorial we form the point of the arrow tip and finish it off.

Part 1 (the beginning) of this tutorial is here

Now cut the arrow to the length desired.

Hot cut off    The piece is cut off

Heat the tip

And heat the tip.

Now we square off the piercing end. We do this with repeated hammer blows. And with each blow I shift the position of the arrow. Notice the change in my hand in these two pictures. You hit it with a hammer blow, rotate it 1/4 turn, hit it again, rotate it 1/4 turn and hit it. You repeat this rotate/hit pattern until it is nice and squared off.

Square the tip Taper the tip

Bring to a point

Now bring it to a point using the same rotate/hit action.

Sand it smooth

And that's it. Now you can finish it with any tools you choose, belt sander, files, a bit more forging.

Get it to the shape and look you want and it can be mounted on an arrow shaft.
