Oliver's Simple Tools for Bladesmithing

Oliver is doing some amazing bladesmithing. And he has submitted more of his work to my website. Check out his medieval forge with a bellows,

or check out his bladesmithing forge with a box bellows here.

Here are some simple tools that I made that are of great help in my bladesmithing projects.

Simple tools for bladesmithing

From back, a specially made two handed drawknife/scraper used for scraping work on forged blades prior to heat treating. I use this for some leveling work on forged blades, but the readily available mill files are what I go to when I need to drawfile or smooth out the bevels on a knife or sword.

The next item is a seating tool' that I have made out of scrap wood. This is used to drive guards up against the shoulders of the blade. A few light taps with a hammer on top of the seating tool pushes the guard down nicely when it is almost flush with the tang/blade shoulder junction.

The chisel is specially made for creating channels on the insides of scabbards and handles/hilts. The curved handle allows me to shave the area where the tang will slide in without my knuckles getting in the way as I work.

The final tool is used to tap out handles that have been burned onto the tang and need additional work before the final hilt and fittings assembly. It can also be used to aid in pushing down the handle onto the tang and in final assembly. The primary function of the tool is to prevent marring to the handle when a tack hammer is used to drive down the handle over the tang or tap it out again. I call it a tapping guard'.

A Bladesmithing Ground Forge and Bellows Box - Oliver has custo built a ground forge for bladesmithing and added a hand operated bellows box. He tells us about it, with included pictures right here: The Ground Forge and Bellows Box
