Here is what he has to say about making this diorama:

It is my interpretation of a scene in the novel, The Hobbit.  The scene is that where Bilbo and his dwarven companions are just outside the troll's treasure cave.  To create the stone work I use Australian Pinetree bark and I dried it out for two days. I then spraypainted a black base coat.  I then started a sequence of dry-brushing acrylic.paint: blue 10% white 30% black 60%.  I applied a total of 12 layers to the large piece and the individual pieces have between 7 to 10 layers.  The ground I used grand El and earth flock.  I used black sand for the base inside the cave.  I used live moss to make the foliage of the scene.  The miniatures I used are from Wizards of The Coast.
